Get Prepared

It's June and hurricane season has officially arrived, so it's an opportunity for those of us who might experience a hurricane (or earthquake, or lava , or tsunami, or tornado, or flooding, or...you get the picture) to get prepared.

Keep it simple to begin with and build from there.

Get a Kit

Do you have an emergency kit? If you don't have one, don't stress or give up. Start small. Start with a bag or a box and put a flashlight or a first aid kit in it.  Each week, add one more item.

If you have a kit already, have you checked it lately?

For a list of supplies to put in your kit, check out the Dhucks' emergency go-kit.

Make a Plan

Do you and your family know where to meet or who to call if you are separated in an emergency or disaster? For a family contact plan, check out the Dhucks' family contact sheet.

If you don't know how to start this discussion with your kids check out
www.ready.gov/kids.

Be Informed

Do you know where you can get information on your local hazards? Or where you could go for more information if there was an emergency in your area?

Check out the on-line resources I've listed in my book 31 Small Steps to Organize for Emergencies (and Disasters), available at Amazon.

Get Involved

Once you and your family are prepared, you might consider preparing to help your community. Check out Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) or the American Red Cross to find an organization near you. Even your local animal shelter might need your help in an emergency.

Whether you stock up on toilet paper, get fresh batteries, check your emergency water & food, or discuss the options with your family, get prepared NOW. Don't stand in line at the store the day before the hurricane arrives buying these supplies.

*FYI:  I do receive $ from Amazon when you click on product links and purchase items from Amazon.

I don't know what you look at or buy and so far I've been able to buy, on average, 3 cups of coffee each year from the income.
