 Stage One: Clarify

This month, I'm asking you to do the writing.

Identify an organizing project that you would like to work on this year. Since I will be covering the various stages over the next several months, a great project to work on would be one that has been on your "gotta do list" for some time but you just haven't felt like doing it. This time will be different, because we'll work on it together.

The first stage to organizing is getting clarity on what you really want, so I'm sending some questions to start you out. Keep in mind that this is a process, so you will likely return to this stage a few times as you play with this project.

Project: _____________________

How would you like the finished project to look? Use colors, textures, sounds, smells and movement to describe it.

What will you be able to do when you're finished that you aren't able to do now?

What will you get from the completed project? (More room, more energy, more time, more connection with others, less stress, easier access,...?)

What problems do you want to solve?

What level of organization would be sufficient or enough? (Does it need to meet Architechural Digest standards or would 'not having to step over the pile' be good enough?)

When would you like the project finished? (Keep in mind, that if it's been on your list for a couple of years, you don't need it done by next week.)

Are you willing and able to work on this in small steps over time?

Is this something you wanted years ago? If so, does it still fit your current lifestyle choices?

If you want some clarifying questions specifically geared for cleaning out your closet, get a copy of my Closet Clearing Questions (look under the Download section).

Whether you share your answers with me, an organizing buddy or just answer the questions for yourself, take time to have fun and play with this stage!

Written goals provide clarity. By documenting your dreams,
you must think about the process of achieving them.
